Project Space Reflection
Project Space Reflection
For project space I chose the private soccer field that is located in Sylmar. The reason I chose this
place was because this is the place where I play soccer every Sunday, and I thought it would have
been interesting to talk about this place. The main interest that I had about this place was the friendly
environment, the competition that this place has, and also how badly mistreated the field is. The only
personal connection I have to this place is that I have been playing here for 2 years.
The writing process from this essay was completely different than project web because for project
space it was more of an essay about observation. To whereas project web was more about
researching about the main topic/issue. I found no similarities between project web and project space
because they both required 2 completely different writing methods. Comparing project web and
project space, I felt that my writing process changed a bit due to the fact that this essay required a bit
of creativity and well written descriptions. I began writing my essay by explaining a description of a
usual Sunday at the private soccer field. I felt that the easiest part for me was discussing my place, but
the hardest part for me was constructing a thesis that related my place to the Sylmar community.
Overall I really enjoyed project space because this was something new that I had never done before
in any of my other previous English classes.

Field Work Report
Sylmar
Park Recreation Center
For
my fieldwork report I went to Sylmar park recreation center on Sunday March 10,
2013. This fieldwork report isn’t about the whole park, its just about the
private soccer field that this park has. This is the soccer field where I
always play soccer on Sundays with my dad at 8 in the morning. The soccer field
is private because there is a huge fence around the whole soccer field. This
means it isn’t a field where everyone can play, the only people who can play on
the field are those that are registered. But people can go inside to watch the
games. The soccer field as a matter of fact is right next to Sylmar High
School. The soccer field is not the best looking soccer field, the grass is
nice but the only problem is that the field consists of a lot of holes. These
holes are dangerous because a player can get hurt, but people like to play
there anyways. When people are playing games the sound you hear is people
running, players yelling at other players, the referee blowing his whistle and
the people watching the game either talking to each other or making fun of
players on the field. The smell that you get from this soccer field is mainly
the grass, but there are people who sell food outside of the field, so you also
smell the hot dogs that people are making. People that are not from around
there would either view this place as ghetto or as entertainment.
The
people that are at this place are those that are going to play or just to
watch. Obviously this means that their interest in this place is soccer. The
cool thing about this place is that everyone knows each other because every
Sunday the same people and the same teams are there at the soccer field. Anyone
can tell who is regular because a lot of the people there are known by their
nicknames. For example my dad’s name is Arnold, but at the soccer field they
call him Plazita, and they call me Plazita Jr. At this place no one will ever
know who Brando is, but if they were to ask for Plazita Jr, they would say, “Oh
he’s over there.” What I really like about the people who are at this place is
that they are friendly to anyone. It doesn’t matter if they are “regular” or
new to this place because no matter what they will always greet anyone who is
there. The thing about this place is that everybody is friendly to one another
and the last thing that they would want is to make someone feel unwanted or not
welcome because soccer is a sport that unites everyone. I would say that it’s
tradition for my father and me to always play soccer on Sundays at this park.
We play with a team called Tikal, we aren’t the best team in the league but
what matters is that we have fun. After our game, which finishes around 10 a.m.,
my dad and I buy hot dogs and watch the other two teams that play right after
us. It’s funny because there is never a time where I don’t laugh at this place,
the people that are there are funny because they are always making fun of each
other or of players playing in the field, it may seem offensive but like I said
everyone there are friends and they all get along. This place is much better
than the place where we use to play in because the soccer field that we play in
now actually has grass, and the old field that we played in was pure dirt. It’s
amazing because I remember when I use to go watch my dad play and now I think
it’s an honor to be allowed to play with him in the same team because my old
man is really good at soccer.

Project Web Reflection
Project
Web Reflection
The topic that I did my essay on was
the dangers of online dating. I established the idea of this topic because I
was watching T.V. and I saw an eHarmony.com commercial. I noticed that in the
commercial it only discussed about the good things of online dating but it
never mentioned anything of possible dangers. At that moment I came up with my
research question which was “Is online dating dangerous?” I did a lot of research
on my question and I found many interesting points about the dangers of online
dating. I learned a lot of new things that I didn’t know before about online
dating in general. Overall I enjoyed developing and writing my essay with the
help of all the sources I researched. I felt that a huge help in writing my
essay were the group blogs. Although our group didn’t necessarily focus on just
one topic, we were all able to help each other out with opinions and ideas.
I feel that my writing process has
definitely changed because I know how to develop my ideas, coming up with a
thesis and writing my essay quicker. Last semester it was a bit more difficult
for me to develop ideas, thesis, and write because I wasn’t sure how to do so
but English 113A really prepared me for my second semester of English. I know I
still have a lot more to improve on but I feel that I’m good where I stand at
the moment. The easiest process for me
in writing my project web essay was developing my thesis and writing my essay,
but what I found most difficult was researching and finding good sources that
supported my topic.

"Online Dating Dangers" Video
For my first source I found a video that relates to my topic about the dangers
of online dating. The video was originally in an ABC news broadcast. It
discusses about how just about anyone can go online and date. What the people
don't realize is who they're actually speaking to. Online dating sites are very
dangerous because just about anyone can pretend to be someone they are not. For
example in the video they show a girl who met a guy on eharmony.com.It happened
to be that the person she met online wasn't real and was a sex offender. This is
just one of the many dangers that can occur due to online dating. The video also
discusses about some solutions to make online dating more reliable. But can they
still be trusted after all?

"What's the Matter with Kids Today?" by Amy Goldwasser
Out of the 4 articles that I read, my favorite article was "Whats the Matter with Kids Todays?" by Amy Goldwasser. I really enjoyed all the other articles but the main reason why I like Goldwasser's article more is because she first talks about the flaws of the internet towards the kids and then she goes into detail of why the internet is being treated as a villain. What I agreed on the most from her article was when she was discussing that parents need to stop treating the internet as a villain. She explains that the day that happens then the teenage population will have the potential to become the next great voices of America. I also really like how she ended her article by saying, "One of them, 70 years from now, might even get up there to accept the very award Lessing did -- and thank the Internet for making him or her a writer and a thinker." The reason why I like how she ends her article is because she doesn't end it by saying the internet is a bad thing. She ends it by saying that in the future the internet can have a good positive impact after all.

My Usual Sunday
Today I spent my Sunday playing 2 soccer games. The first one was at 8 in the morning, luckily we won 3-0. In order for us to enter the play offs we need to win the next few games that are left. The second game was at 12 p.m unfortunately we lost that game 1-0 because we were down one man. After my soccer games I bought some In-n-Out. Now I'm just relaxing and waiting for my week to begin.
